Thurrock RFC T-Birds

About the team:

Thurrock Ladies, endearingly known as the “T-Birds” are one of the most recognised women’s rugby teams in the country. Having formed in 1988 the team has gone from strength to strength over the seasons, now having over 50 players on their books, with weekly training sessions as well as gym access, strength and conditioning support and a nutritionist provision.

The T-Birds climbed from the National Challenge leagues to the Premiership in just 5 seasons, twice winning their new League in their promotion year.

In the last season the T-Birds once again won Championship 1 South and they have now won the title 5 out of 6 seasons, and have never finished lower than 2nd.

Oakfield, the Thurrock home-ground, is known locally as a fortress, with the team having lost just once at home in the last 5 seasons. The team has a strong history of producing talented players, with several players going on to represent squads at County, Regional, and International level. They have even had two Olympians amongst their ranks!

The T-Birds success has not come by accident and talent is nurtured from a young age with senior, development and youth squads. The strong youth set up, known as the T-Chicks, creates a pathway for young players to lead into the senior team.

For the T-Birds, it is still about fun, despite the pressures of climbing the leagues, the ladies still know how to party. They are a strong unit both on and off of the pitch, with a huge team spirit that is infectious and the envy of most teams. The team encapsulate the rugby values and ethos and are ultimately a group of dedicated, hard-working team mates.

About the Author:

My name is John ‘Max’ Maxwell and I am the MD of RuckinRugby, a website design and hosting company focused on all things Rugby. Rugby is a huge part of my life and after meeting Catherine Spencer some years ago, I became interested in the women’s game at the highest level.

The World Champion team of 2014 were something very special and I immediately became aware of how important our domestic game would become in maintaining the sort of national side that I, and many others love to watch. This inspired me to do whatever I can to promote Women’s Elite Rugby in England.
